Mauricio Pochettino Receives Public Backing Of Todd Boehly

May 9, 2024 12:12 PM

Todd Boehly has backed Mauricio Pochettino as manager of Chelsea amid speculation around his future, saying he has been impressed by the team's upturn in form and "beautiful football."

"We've seen the last two and a half games, at least in the second half at Aston Villa [2-2 draw] and Tottenham and West Ham where we played just beautiful football," Boehly said.

"It was so fluid, it was exactly the way we drew it up, when we came out of the back, built up and moved up the pitch, [it was] very organised and the number of shots we had on board. In those two and a half games, you could really start to see what we were working on coming together.

"Even the commentary has changed over the last two and a half games. I've never seen anything change so quickly."

Pochettino guided Chelsea to the League Cup final in February, which they lost 1-0 in extra time to Liverpool, and also to the semifinals of the FA Cup last month, where Manchester City beat them 1-0.

Cavan Sullivan Signs Record Homegrown Deal With Philadelphia

May 9, 2024 12:06 PM

Cavan Sullivan has signed the largest homegrown contract in MLS history with the Philadelphia Union. Sullivan, 14, will transfer to Manchester City after he turns 18 as part of the deal.

Sullivan's older brother, Quinn, 20, has been a first-team player on Philadelphia since 2021.

"I've always wanted to start my career here because this is my home and I've always been on the sidelines of Quinn's games and I've been in and around the facility when my uncle worked here," Sullivan told ESPN. "So, I've always been inspired and to play in front of this culture, and these fans are special.

"But I also think the collaboration between the Union and the City Group was -- I think that did it for me. I always watch Man City. They're like every kid's dream team. For [Philadelphia and Man City] to come together and agree on something -- I sat with my family and my agents and we decided that it was the best plan."

On whether Sullivan will debut before July 29, Union coach Jim Curtin told ESPN: "If he's healthy, he'll do it."

Sullivan's best position is still yet to be determined, but he's an attacker who is dynamic with the ball at his feet and confident taking on defenders. Curtin said he could serve as a second striker or an attacking player and that his versatility will be an asset for the Union.

"I would say the big word is 'playmaker,'" Sullivan said. "That's what I try and be every game, every training. I think I'm good on the dribble. My decision-making is pretty good, and my vision on the field is one of my qualities."

Real Madrid Stuns Bayern With Late Comeback To Advance To UCL Final

May 8, 2024 10:13 PM

Bayern Munich was on the verge of returning to the Champions League final and another match at Wembley against Borussia Dortmund until Real Madrid did what they always do in this competition with a late pair of goals.

Trailing 3-2 on aggregate following a goal from Alphonso Davies in the 68th minute, Joselu scored in the 88th minute on a rebound after Manuel Neuer dropped a Real Madrid to bring the tie even.

Joselu scored again seconds later with the goal originally disallowed before VAR confirmed he was not offside.

Bayern believed they equalized toward the end of stoppage time when Matthijs de Ligt found the back of the net, but the linesman already raised his flag for offside and the referee blew his whistle. Replays showed Bayern was onside.

"I'm the hero? Well, I really don't know about that," said Joselu. "All I can definitely tell you is that I'm a very happy man!

"This was incredible. Spectacular. This team simply never gives in. Fighting until the final whistle is in our blood."

Real Madrid are seeking their 15th Champions League trophy and sixth since 2014.

Bayern are looking for a new manager after announcing in February they will part company with Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season.

West Ham Parts Ways With David Moyes, Hires Julen Lopetegui

May 6, 2024 2:14 PM

West Ham has parted ways with David Moyes and will hire Julen Lopetegui as his replacement.

Moyes said: “I have enjoyed four-and-a-half brilliant years at West Ham, and the club is in a stronger position than when I returned back in 2019.

“When I joined West Ham for a second time, the club was one place above the relegation zone, and it has been a terrific journey to have achieved three consecutive seasons in Europe.

“After leading the club to safety, we guided the team to finishes of sixth and seventh in the Premier League, and I was delighted when we won the Europa Conference League title last June – the club’s first major trophy in 43 years.

“I would like to thank all the players for their support, and all the success they have achieved, over the last four-and-a-half years.”
